Most citizens of Jaikustan express themselves in threads or channels and that tends to keep the noise down. I tend to follow the flow via RSS asynchronously and I pull two dozen Jaiku personalities directly onto my mobile phone. This seems to give me a pleasant level of ambient intimacy.
Oh, and a big shout-out to @marybnolan who bravely wades in from Brighton, hopefully with no desire to amass hordes of followers. I still cannot fathom how having thousands of followers helps me listen better. I've got gigs of podcasts I've never heard so that doesn't mean I'm a better listener and hundreds of hardback books on my shelves I've never read so that doesn't mean I'm a better reader. Sitting among thousands in Whitehart Lane doesn't make you a better footballer. I guess I'm just confused by the euphoria brought on by hoarding tendencies.
@marybnolan one thing that might be helpful - if you use an IM client, and use GTalk (or indeed a multi-IM account client) you can subscribe to the Jaiku IM bot.

Welcome Mary. Not sure if you are aware of the channels here but some that might be of interest include #irishopencoffee #podcamp #craftyireland and #jaiku

Yo Mary! Welcome to Jaikustan.
Dinner is served at 9, if you're late they feed it and you to the hungry hounds.
No noise after 11PM, unless its loud punk music, then your alright.
No walking on the grass. And no running with scissors.
Other than that, relax.
Twitter and Jaiku are like chalk and creamcheese. I'll allow you decide which is which!

Look here http://www.jaiku.com/help/im
This is how I follow real-time Jaiku when I am at home. Like Bernie (and lots others no doubt) I use the Jaiku client on my phone.
Hope that helps.
